Understanding Super Bills
Insurance & Super Bills
I am an out-of-network provider, meaning I cannot work directly with insurance companies. If you'd like reimbursement from your insurer, I can provide a "super bill" — a detailed receipt for you to submit to your insurance company.
That said, there are a few things worth keeping in mind:
Reimbursement is not guaranteed. Your insurance company determines whether to cover services, and unfortunately that is outside of my control. In some cases, they may issue payment and later reverse it.
My records may not always meet your insurer's requirements. Each company has different documentation standards, and while I cannot guarantee my records will satisfy them, I will do my best to meet their requirements.
A diagnosis is typically required. Insurance reimbursement often requires a formal DSM-5 mental health diagnosis, which becomes part of your permanent medical record. Please be aware that services focused on personal growth or self-improvement — as meaningful and important as that work is — do not qualify as a DSM-5 diagnosis and are generally not covered.
Your privacy may be affected. Submitting mental health records to an insurance company means your information is no longer fully private. If this is a concern, please keep it in mind as you decide.
